How to Handle Overflow Recycling This Week

Wilmington's DPW offers guidance on how to handle recycling this week after the Christmas holiday.

We have some guidance from the Wilmington DPW on how residents can handle getting all their recycling into one container for pickup this week following the Christmas holiday.

Over the summer, Wilmington moved to single-stream recycling with just one recycling container per household. While there is an option to purchase an additional recycling container, most residents haven’t had an issue getting all their items ready for collection, that is until the aftermath of Christmas wrapping, boxes and holiday entertaining.

Unfortunately, if you only have one recycling container, you are limited to filling that for pick up. Any recycling put out to the curb not in that container will not be picked up.

But the DPW has some suggestions on how to get as much space as you can in your container this time of year.

Wilmington’s DPW says the best way to handle the increase in recycling from over the holidays is to compact them as much as possible. Crushing cans and plastic containers and breaking down cardboard into small pieces will make more room in the recycle cart.
