Selectmen Okay Senior Center, Town Hall Site Recommendations

WILMINGTON, MA — Wilmington's Board of Selectmen voted Monday to endorse recommended sites for a new senior center and town hall/school administration building.

The board voted 4-1 in favor of the recommendations made by the respective building committees.

For the senior center, the selectmen approved the recommendation to use the site adjacent to St. Dorothy's Church.

Selectman Kevin Caira said he supported building a new senior center but not at that site; the other four members opted to go with the Senior Center Building Committee's recommendation.

For the town hall/school administration building, the board approved the recommended Swain Green site.

Multiple members were concerned about issues including traffics and the aesthetics of a multi-story building there, but only Selectman Gary DePalma voted against the site.

"Residents do not support a town hall/school administration building at this time," DePalma said, but the other members followed the committee recommendation.

Selectman Greg Bendel noted that the 2020 annual town meeting approved moving forward with feasibility studies and schematic designs for both building projects.
