Six Wilmington Residents Medal at SkillsUSA State Finals for Shawsheen

The competition is the "Olympics for vocational technical education," according to Shawsheen Valley Technical High School Superintendent Charles Lyons.

 

Shawsheen Valley Technical High School students recently took home 27 medals at the SkillsUSA state finals in Marlborough, according to a release from the school. 

Of the 87 students from Shawsheen that participated in the competition, six Wilmington residents brought medals home:

  • Junior Jillian Davidson of Wilmington took second place as part of Shawsheen's Health Knowledge Bowl team.
  • Junior James Gibb of Wilmington earned a silver medal in masonry.
  • Senior Kevin White of Wilmington took home the bronze as part of Shawsheen's Mechatronics Team.
  • Senior Tyler Warner of Wilmington received a bronze in plumbing.
  • Senior Brandon Donovan of Wilmington took home a bronze in Mobo Robotics Technology.
  • Sophomore George Hooper of Wilmington also took home a bronze in Mobo Robotics Technology.

“We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students,” said Shawsheen’s Superintendent Charles Lyons. “The level of competition is extreme.  This is the Olympics for vocational technical education and all who participated valued the experience.”

The competition included a a Mechatronics segment, which saw students assemble, integrate and program components to create an automated system capable of completing a specific task, according to the release.

Gold medal winners for Shawsheen was the team of senior Caitlin Kelley of Tewksbury and junior Adam Rovinelli of Burlington, both are in the school's electronics technology program. 

Gold medal winners will travel to Kansas City in June to compete in the national SkillsUSA finals.
