WILMINGTON, MA -- The Wilmington Police Department is looking to hire an Animal Control Officer/Animal Inspector.

According to the job posting, the Animal Control Officer and Animal Inspector is responsible for the enforcement of state and local animal control laws and regulations, the control of rabies in the domestic animal population, the development and maintenance of the animal census in town, and the inspection of animals in the care of residents or businesses such as to ensure humane treatment and care.

  • Reports to: Police Chief or designee
  • Salary: $766.67 to $970.09 per week
  • Hours: 40 hour per week, required to respond to calls for service occurring after normal business hours and on weekends; schedule to be flexible.

  • Associate’s degree in animal husbandry or two years of experience in animal control, animal husbandry, or enforcement of laws, or other relevant combination of education and experience.
  • Valid Driver’s License.
  • Ability to obtain a firearms license in Massachusetts.
  • Knowledge in the handling and care of domestic animals such as dogs and cats; experience with common urban wildlife such as raccoons, skunks, and bats.
  • Knowledge in the reading and application of local and state laws, regulations, and requirements preferably related to animal control.
  • Ability to successfully complete Animal Control Officer training as required by MGL 140 §151C within one year of appointment.
  • Commitment to excellent customer service.
  • Ability to work independently and as a member of team, work cooperatively with other staff, departments, and municipalities.
  • Excellent verbal and writing skills.
  • Flexible schedule and ability to respond to after-hours calls for service
