WILMINGTON, MA — The Wilmington High School boys and girls soccer programs raised approximately $3,000 for a local cancer charity during the annual Kick Cancer games on Saturday.

The day featured four games between Wilmington High and Stoneham High — JV girls, JV boys, varsity girls, varsity boys — and all Wilmington players donned special pink or blue and pink jerseys.

The proceeds were donated to Wilmington-based Hope and Friendship Metastatic Breast Cancer Foundation, which helps women and men with a diagnosis of Stage IV metastatic breast cancer and their families. The foundation offers support groups, resources for learning and networking, therapeutic activities, scholarships and creative retreats. Hope and Friendship also supports research focused on treatments.

The Wilmington athletes raised the money through a series of activities. The WHS girls soccer team conducted a Kick Cancer apparel fundraiser and a scratch ticket raffle, while the boys varsity team moved "#RollCats" signs around town asking for donations.

Together, the boys and girls programs also conducted a bake sale.

Wildcats girls varsity coach Sue Hendee said this was the 11th year the programs have held a fundraiser to benefit Hope and Friendship, though money had previously been raised for other breast cancer awareness organizations.

The Kick Cancer games were originally done by the girls soccer program, but the boys teams joined the initiative several years ago, according to Hendee.

For the record, all four Wilmington teams tied Stoneham on Saturday. The varsity boys tied 0-0, the varsity girls tied 1-1, the JV boys tied 2-2 and the JV girls tied 0-0.
