Wilmington Walgreens Closes Its Doors Tuesday

What you need to know if you have prescriptions at the Wilmington location.

By now residents know the Wilmington Walgreens on Main Street is closing today. The Wilmington store will close at end of business hours on Tuesday, June 30.

“The Wilmington Walgreens has been in operation for eight years and the decision to close wasn’t easy,” says Phil Caruso from Walgreens Media Relations.

Wilmington Patch spoke with Walgreens officials Tuesday morning about the closure and the potential impacts on, in particular, pharmacy customers at that location.

For customers who currently have prescription files at the Wilmington Walgreens, those prescriptions will be automatically transferred to the Rite Aid Pharmacy in town, located at 208 Main St. Pharmacy patients don’t need to take any action, the transfer is automatic and customers will be receiving a letter in the mail providing more information about their prescription records, according to Caruso.

Caruso says they are transferring the prescriptions locally, as they normally do when closing a location, to make it as easy a transition as possible for pharmacy customers.

“We transferred the prescriptions records to Rite Aid because we felt this was the least inconvenience for our customers and we wanted to ensure patients continue to have access to nearby pharmacy services,” he says.

With regard to the current store employees, Caruso says the company expects to place the majority of them in jobs in other area stores.

As for what will go in the soon to be empty Walgreens’ location, that is still unknown. Walgreens actually only leased the property so Caruso has no information as to what happens next with the building. Wilmington Patch will keep you updated as we find out more information from the property owner.
