UPDATED: Wrong-Way Driver Causes Head-on Collision on Rte. 128

The accident happened on Rte. 128 in Burlington at 4:30 a.m. after a vehicle was traveling south on Rte. 128 North.

WILMINGTON, MA - A wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on Rte. 128 early Tuesday morning, leaving two people seriously injured and shutting down most of the busy stretch of highway in that area. 

The accident occured at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday morning and happened on Rte. 128 Northbound just before Rte. 3. According to State Police, a vehicle was traveling south on Rte. 128 North before the crash.

The Jaws of Life were used to remove the drivers of both vehicles and according to reports both may have been unconscious when emergency crews arrived. Both were transported to area hospitals. There is no word yet on their conditions.

All highway traffic lanes were closed for more than two hours following the crash. Just after 7 a.m. all lanes of the highway were opened.

Police are currently on the scene, as well as the State Police reconstruction team.
