WORCESTER, MA — Former Worcester mayor, city councilor and WTAG host Jordan Levy has died, according to local officials.

Levy, 79, was born and raised in Worcester's Vernon Hill neighborhood and graduated from the former Classical High School, now the Worcester Public Schools administration building.

Levy first won a city council seat in 1975, which he held until 1993. During his time on council he served two separate terms as mayor from 1980 to 1982 and 1987 to 1993. He also served as a member of the state Governor's Council from 1994 to 1998 and on the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority, according to his Worcester Historical Museum profile.

Levy was perhaps better known as a local radio host on the conservative Worcester radio station WTAG, anchoring the weekday 3 to 6 p.m. slot. He had not been on air in recent months, however.

"Such a loss for Worcester! Former Mayor Jordan Levy had an incredible presence in Worcester. One of the 'greats'! When he became ill and couldn’t do his show, we experienced a 'great silence' in the City. Whether he agreed with you or not, and he certainly let you know," At-Large City Councilor Kate Toomey tweeted.

"So sad to hear the news that former Mayor Jordan Levy passed away. My grandparents got me to listen to him and I looked forward to 3:00 every day. Thank you for all you did for Worcester," School Committee member Laura Clancy tweeted Friday.

"Jordan was so kind to public health issues especially the Greater Worcester Goods for Guns Gun buyback program. He was a true advocate for the citizens of Worcester. Thanks, Jordan. RIP," Worcester Medical Director Michael Hirsh tweeted.

"Whatever you thought of Jordan Levy politically, there is no denying he was one of the most influential people in the over 300-year history of Worcester," Talk of the Commonwealth radio show producer Ben White tweeted.

Mayor Joseph Petty Jr. said Levy had an "indomitable spirit" and called Levy's speeches on the council floor "legendary."

"Jordan Levy's exuberance and dedication to Worcester will always be remembered, and he leaves an indelible mark on our city's history. We honor his legacy and express our condolences to his family and loved ones," Petty said.
