Sliver On Indian Lake In Worcester To Become Park: See Designs

WORCESTER, MA — We may soon know what's going to happen with a prime piece of shoreline on Indian Lake that's been vacant for years.

A triangular piece of land wedged between Indian Lake and I-190 was cleared in 2021 in preparation for the construction of a park. Multiple options for the park will be presented at a public hearing coming up in March.

MassDOT owns the four-acre parcel, but Worcester is leasing the 149 West Boylston Drive site. A portion of the land near Mattson Avenue is already in use as a community teaching garden linked to the Indian Lake Community Association.

At the upcoming meeting, the city will show off six designs by UMass-Amherst Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning students. The city will take public comments on the plans during the meeting to help pick a final master plan for the site.

The park would be the fourth along Indian Lake — but the only one located on a section of lake not passable without a car. The east side of the land is the retaining wall for I-190, which spans the section of the lake from Mattson to the Greendale Family Branch YMCA campus.

The meeting will happen March 6 at 6 p.m. at the Unitarian Unversalist Church Fellowship Hall, 90 Holden St.
