'Chaotic Swirling:' Residents In MA Town Witness Tornado Amid Sunday Deluge

The National Weather Service confirmed the EF-0 tornado, which hit Sunday as onlookers watched.

NORTH BROOKFIELD, MA — Residents in a Worcester County town witnessed a tornado that cut through the community on Sunday during a volatile storm, according to the National Weather Service.

The weather service confirmed that the EF-0 tornado traveled 2 miles across North Brookfield carving a 250-yard path of destruction — although no people were hurt, and no homes were damaged. The tornado did topple trees.

The tornado touched down just before 11 a.m. Sunday near the town's water treatment plant and lasted for about 4 minutes as it traveled to the northeast side of town with winds topping 80 mph.

"One eyewitness was in an auto body shop and reported strong winds making the garage door bow inward. Another eyewitness, the fire chief of North Brookfield, saw debris lofted in the air. A third eyewitness described chaotic swirling as the tornado passed by," the post-action report said.

The tornado touched down after the weather service issued a tornado watch for much of the state. Earlier Sunday morning, northern Middlesex and parts of Essex county were under a tornado warning during the same storm. No other tornadoes were confirmed on Sunday in Massachusetts.

The tornado occurred as two weather systems converged over the central part of the state: a column of moist air that moved up the Atlantic coast and a front that came in from the Great Lakes.
