Toddler In Critical Condition, Hit By Car Mom Was Driving

The toddler was reportedly in the driveway when her mother backed the car up. She suffered a head injury.

WORCESTER, MA—A nearly two-year-old is in critical but stable condition with a head injury after being struck by a car her mother was driving, police said.

Police responded on Saturday, Oct. 28, around 6:26 p.m. to a home on Kosta Street, where a child had been struck by a vehicle. The child was unconscious but breathing. EMS intubated the child, which appeared to have a head injury. The child was stabilized at the scene and brought to the hospital along with the child's mother.

Investigators arrived to process the scene.

The child was transported to ICU and is in critical but stable condition with a head injury and internal bleeding, said police. Investigators were told that so far medical reports are optimistic and that the head injury may not be as serious as originally thought.

Investigators found that the mother was in the process of moving out of the Kosta Street address and was packing the car as both of her children - a four year old and the 23 month old - were inside the apartment playing when she went outside. The mother went to move her vehicle forward so she wouldn’t block the other vehicles in the driveway, and when she did so she felt a bump and immediately stopped. She got out of the car and saw her daughter on the ground, called police and tended to the child.

Investigators towed the 2011 Toyota Highlander to police headquarters for a thorough mechanical inspection. The vehicle remains impounded at this time. In addition, as a standard procedure when investigating an incident that involves a young child, the District Attorney’s office was notified as well as the Department of Children and Families. The responding officer also filed a 51A form with DCF.
