UMass Chan Ranked Among Best Medical Schools In Nation: U.S. News

WORCESTER, MA — U.S. News & World Report's 2024 medical school rankings has rated the T.H. Chan School of Medicine at UMass Chan Medical School as the No. 1 for primary care education in the Northeast, and among the best in the nation.

The rankings released Tuesday rated Worcester-based UMass Chan No. 10 nationwide for medical school primary care programs, and a "tier 1" campus. The school was the only one in the top 10 in the Northeast. UMass Chan was also ranked the No. 3 best medical school for research in Massachusetts, behind Boston University and Tufts.

"Our campus community is united together in the collaborative spirit of advancing medicine and science to change the course of the history of disease," Chancellor Michael Collins said in a news release Tuesday. "This recognizes what we continuously strive for: training the next generation of physicians, nurse leaders and scientists and improving the health and wellness of the people throughout the commonwealth and around the world."

Schools offering primary care programs specialize in training students to become primary care physicians and family doctors, according to U.S. News.

The ranking comes as the school plans to accept a larger class of 225 students into the class of 2028, up from about 160 in the class that graduated this spring. The school is also expanding beyond its main Worcester campus along Plantation Street. The first group of students at a new UMass Chan-Lahey Hospital program will begin in August.

The UMass Chan Medical School is one of five campuses in the UMass system, and includes the Tan Chingfen Graduate School of Nursing in Worcester, ForHealth Consulting of UMass Chan, Morningside Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and MassBiologics in Boston. The school also has a campus at the Baystate Health complex in Springfield.
