WORCESTER, MA — City officials have reversed a Highland Street detour that began this week due to utility work associated with the new Doherty High School building.

The detour began Monday with eastbound traffic usually the road normally, and westbound traffic detoured at Park Avenue to Pleasant Street. On Tuesday, city officials said the detour would flip to eastbound traffic detouring at Newton Square using Pleasant Street and Park Avenue.

"Traffic signal timing has been adjusted at the intersection of Park Avenue and Pleasant Street to help accommodate detoured traffic, but drivers should expect congested conditions during peak traffic periods. During this time, motorists are strongly encouraged to seek alternate routes," the city said in a news release.

Eversource will be replacing a gas main along Highland during the closure. The lane closure will be in place weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Aug. 23.

Residents living off Highland will be able to use either Institute Road or the westbound Highland lanes to get home.
