Worcester Gets More Than $650K For Playground Renovation, Farm Conservation Project

Gov. Maura Healey awarded over $12 million to create and improve local parks and protect natural land across the state.

WORCESTER, MA — Worcester received two state grants for projects in the city.

The city was awarded a $425,000 Parkland Acquisitions and Renovations for Communities Grant for the renovation of South Worcester Playground, and a $245,605.50 Local Acquisitions for Natural Diversity Grant for the Brooks Dairy Farm conservation project.

The funding is part of Gov. Maura Healey's over $12 million in awards to create and improve local parks and protect natural land across the state. The funding will help with flooding, extreme heat and give residents more access to open spaces, according to the state's Executive Office of Energey and Environmental Affairs.

The South Worcester Playground Renovation Phase III will include renovating basketball and handball courts to include new fencing, sports lighting, electrical service, handball wall and court infrastructure.

The Brooks Dairy Farm Acquisition, in partnership with the Greater Worcester Land Trust, will protect 7.7 acres of urban forest to mitigate urban heat and secure the existing 10-foot-wide pathway that connects Nelson Place Elementary School to the adjacent neighborhood.
