Melendez' stepmother set up a GoFundMe fundraiser for the teen, who had just turned 19.

"Our son was a great kid hardworking who loved being around friends and family. He loved spending his spare time at home with his family. We are going threw the hardest time of our life and wouldn’t wish this on anyone," Sashira Belfort Lopez wrote on the fundraiser page.
