VAN BUREN COUNTY, MI — Two adult dogs and a liter of 19 mastiff puppies died in a building fire early Sunday morning in southwest Michigan, according to officials.

The fire happened at 4:50 a.m. at an outbuilding on a property on M-43 in Arlington Township, which is roughly 15 miles east of South Haven, according to South Haven Area Emergency Services.

Officials said the puppies were 19 days old.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they found the building fully engulfed in flames, officials said.

Investigators believe a heat lamp that was sitting near straw caused the fire.
