Two Michigan stores are among the top 50 places to shop for clothes in the nation, according to a New York Times list.

Detroit's Coup D’état and southwest Michigan’s AP Shop made the list.

Coup D’état, located at 9301 Kercheval Avenue, "has the type of experimental look that you might expect from a retail space in a revitalizing city like Detroit," according to the Times.

AP Shop, located at 14931 Lakeside Road, in Lakeside, is about an hour's driver from Chicago. The Times wrote the shop "trades in the kind of soft and sophisticated clothes that moneyed people with taste like to wear on summer vacations."

Ariane Prewitt, a former visual merchandising director at Barneys New York, opened the store in 2010. The shop carries cotton pieces from Cristaseya and Dosa, pleated items by the Chinese designer Shan Shan Ruan and tiered skirts from the Romanian brand Les Vacances d’Irina, according to the Times.

The shop is only open from May to mid-December and by appointment.

To determine the list, Times' reporters and editors evaluated more than 120 clothing stores across the nation based on inventory, customer service, ambience and location. They visited all 50 stores on the list.
