2 MI Spots Make USA Today's 'Best Restaurants' List

USA TODAY released a new ranking of the best restaurants in the U.S. on this week, and two in metro Detroit were included.

MICHIGAN — Two metro Detroit restaurants made USA TODAY’s list of the best restaurants in the country.

USA TODAY released a new ranking of the best restaurants in the U.S. on Thursday, and Mabel Gray in Hazel Park and Tomato Brothers in Howell made the list.

Mabel Gray, located along John R Road in Hazel Park, opened in 2015 and is best-known for its seasonal menu. Everything is handmade from scratch, with fresh, ethical ingredients from Chef Rigato’s extensive network of farms, butchers and foragers, according to its website.

"Few Detroit-area restaurants offer the level of continuous excellence that Mabel Gray exudes," Lyndsay C. Green of the Detroit Free Press writes. "There are tried-and-true classics, like steak frites, a 60-day dry-aged, bone-in American wagyu strip steak served with a hearty bowl of house-made fries decorated with pecorino and herbaceous clippings of fresh rosemary."

Tomato Brothers, located on W Grand River Ave in Howell, opened in 1981 and is best-known for their classic Italian and Greek menu, including the tasty pizza, meatballs and pasta and especially their breadsticks.

"The color scheme at Tomato Brothers has changed since the 1980s, but everything else — from the classic soft lighting to the plush seats in the waiting area to the design of the children's menu — has been the same since today's adult diners were children," Cassandra Lybrink of the Livingston Daily writes.
