MI AG Nessel To Fight DTE Energy's Latest Gas Hike Request
DTE Energy said the proposed increase is needed for pay for infrastructure, maintenance and workers salaries.
Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel is planning to fight DTE Energy's latest request for a natural gas hike.
Her office says the utility wants to raise natural gas rates by $237 million annually. That would mean a 10 percent increase for DTE gas customers, including at least an 8 percent hike for residential customers, she says.
“Time and again, we’ve seen DTE try to pass on to its customers millions of dollars in unnecessary expenses, such as private jet travel for its executives," Nessel said. "My office will go through this proposal with a fine-tooth comb to make sure every dollar DTE wants to collect from ratepayers is tied to a clear and measurable benefit. Michigan families should not be asked to pay more for utility services simply to pad corporate profits."

DTE Energy told Patch the proposed increase is needed to pay for infrastructure, worker salaries, lower forecasted sales and maintenance expense.
"Natural gas plays a vital role in everyday life – from heating homes to cooking meals," said Bob Richard, president and chief operating officer, DTE Gas. "This request allows us to continue investing in the safety and reliability of our system, while keeping costs low for the customers who depend on us for generations to come."

If approved, the utility said gas customers will not see a change in their base rate until October 2026.
The matter will be decided by Michigan Public Service Commission. The commission has 10 months to rule on this case.
DTE serves natural gas to 1.3 million customers across the Michigan and electricity to roughly 2.2 million customers in Southeast Michigan.
