MI Crash Deaths Decline Amid Nationwide Decline: What To Know

After a spike in traffic crashes during the COVID-19 pandemic, fatal traffic crashes​ have been declining in Michigan, federal data shows.

MICHIGAN — As we head into 2025, Michigan is seeing a decline in fatal traffic crashes, according to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

There were 789 deaths in motor vehicle crashes during the first nine months of 2024 in Michigan, a 6.6 percent decrease from 2023 when 845 people died in motor vehicle crashes during the first nine months, according to the data.

Michigan's traffic death rate also decreased from 1.15 to 1.07 during that timeframe, according to the data.

Across the nation, there were 29,135 deaths in motor vehicle crashes during the first nine months of 2024, according to the data.

That's a 4.4 percent decrease from 2023 when roughly 30,490 people died in fatal crashes during the first nine months, according to the data.
