Michigan To Offer 24/7 Mental Health Hotline
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed the law this week, calling for a crisis hotline that can help Michiganders at any time of the day or night.
MICHIGAN — Michigan will soon have a statewide mental health hotline, thanks to legislation just by Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
House Bill 4051 amends the Mental Health Code to establish the Michigan CARES (Community, Access, Resources, Education and Safety) hotline for residents experiencing a mental health crisis. This bill was sponsored by Rep. Mary Whiteford, R – Casco Township.
“As governor, my number one job is to protect the health and safety of all Michigan residents,” said Whitmer. “By creating a mental health hotline that will be available 24/7, we have taken a necessary step towards giving all Michiganders the care they need.”

The telephone referral system will be available around the clock and will refer people experiencing a mental health crisis to service providers.
A spending law approved in 2018 included $3 million to develop, operate and maintain a hotline pilot program, according to reports. The new law takes effect in three months.
