EAST LANSING, MI — The gunman in a shooting that left three dead and five injured Monday night at Michigan State University has died, according to police. Authorities said the shooter was found off-campus and appeared to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"There is no longer a threat to campus and the shelter-in-place has been lifted," police tweeted shortly before 12:30 a.m. Tuesday, when they announced the shooter was dead.

The shooting began not long after 8 p.m. Monday on the university's East Lansing campus, officials said. In addition to the three killed, police said at least five people were shot and taken to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing, where some had life-threatening injuries, according to police.

Police described the shooter as a short Black man wearing a mask, a ball cap, a jean jacket and red shoes. They did not say what kind of gun was used in the shooting.

Surveillance video showed the shooter leaving the union building on the campus' north side, authorities said. Police warned people in the community to shelter in place.

There was lots of false information, such as the number of shooters and locations where the shootings took place, circulating on social media, according to police.

Students and staff at the campus were told to "secure in place" after shots were fired inside Berkey Hall at 8:18 p.m., police said.

Police confirmed there was then a second shooting on the campus at IM East, which is about one mile away, roughly 50 minutes after the first shooting inside Berkey Hall.

While the shooter was at large, officers cleared Brody Hall, Snyder/Phillips Hall, Mason Hall, Abbot Hall, Landon Hall, the MSU Union and Berkey Hall on the campus.

Michigan State University officials canceled all campus activities for 48 hours, including athletics and classes.

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said in a tweet that she has been briefed on the shooting, and that first responders were on the ground searching for the gunman.

Michigan State Police warned people to stay away from the university as authorities searched for the shooter.

"Yes, it's hard to do when you have loved ones on campus or adjacent to the campus. But it is far too dangerous as this armed suspect is moving in the area and police attempt to take them into custody," state police said. "As always scanner traffic is inaccurate."
