UPDATE: Berkley Man Will Stand Trial in Attack on Royal Oak Roommate

The Berkley man charged with beating, stabbing and biting a 61-year-old Royal Oak man calmly waived his right to have a preliminary examination in 44^th District Court Friday morning. Judge Terrence Brennan ruled Brent M. Smetana, 20, bound over to Oakland County Circuit Court for trial.

Smetana faces charges of assault with intent to murder after Royal Oak Police responded to a noise call at 3:37 a.m. July 25 at the Beverly Hills Apartments and say they found him viciously beating resident David Chambers, 61.

The preliminary exam, which began Aug. 24, was delayed  at the request of defense attorney Jack Holmes, who wanted to review his client’s medical records.

Oakland County Assistant Prosecutor Kelly Collins indicated Smetana’s medical records, which the court allowed to be unsealed last Friday, and additional photographs and an audio recording of an interview were provided to the defense counsel earlier this week.

Smetana met Chambers approximately a year ago at a Narcotics Anonymous meeting, The Daily Tribune reports.

Chambers testified Aug. 24 that the two men had spent the night sharing vodka and cough syrup before Smetana attacked him as he sat naked at his computer, according to The Daily Tribune.

Chambers was beaten, stabbed and bitten and was transported to William Beaumont Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

"He said, very calmly, 'It's your turn to die,' " Chambers testified, according to The Daily Tribune.
