WXYZ reported Wednesday that Fender and his horses were staying with his son in Southfield before heading up north to visit Fender's father and then traveling to Alabama where he will make a new home.
It took the Michigan native 5 1/2 months to make the journey, during which Fender slept in a tent most nights, according to WXYZ. His wardrobe included four pairs of socks, four sets of underwear, two pants and two shirts, the television station reports.
"I saw a John Wayne movie, and I just said: 'I want to do that'," Fender told WXYZ.
