Norup Gets All-Clear After Smoke Reported in Art Room

School, public safety officials say recently installed motion sensor was the likely cause.

was evacuated briefly Wednesday after smoke was reported in the art room.

"It looks like there was a short in the wiring to a motion sensor," which produced "very light smoke" in the classroom and adjacent hallway, Oak Park Public Safety Lt. Mike Pinkerton said.

Communications Supervisor Shira Good said in an e-mail that the sensor had recently been installed. She said the students and staff were evacuated shortly before 1:30 p.m.

Pinkerton said Public Safety officials were on the scene within minutes of receiving a call from the school and gave the building an all-clear within 10 minutes of assessing the situation. Pinkerton said power to the motion sensor was shut off and a thermal imager was used to determine heat in a 3-inch-by-3-inch area of the wall.

An electrician will be able to make the necessary repairs, Pinkerton said, adding that the building is safe.
