Reading Nook: Celebrate Mother's Day

Many of us learned to love books and reading from our moms.

Maybe your mom took you to the library each week or read to you at night before bed. Perhaps you remember her curled up in the evening with a novel she couldn't put down. If you have children, you may be passing the gift of reading on to them in similar ways.

In advance of Mother's Day on Sunday, Director Celia Morse and children's librarian Karen Tower have selected several titles for children and adults to enjoy this week.

Children's books (recommended by Karen Tower)

• Mother Bear's Picnic by Else Holmelund Minarik, 2003: Little Bear and his father plan a surprise picnic for Mother Bear to enjoy on Mother's Day.
• The Mother's Day Sandwich by Jillian Wjnot, 1990: Ivy and Hackett's mother shows them how to make a special sandwich for Mother's Day.

• T. Rex and the Mother's Day Hug by Lois G. Grambling, 2008: A young T. rex learns that a hug is the best present he can give his mother on her special day.

Adult books (recommended by Celia Morse)

• Deep Blue Sea for Beginners by Luanne Rice, 2009: A mother and her two teenage daughters are reunited on the isle of Capri after a 10-year separation caused by a disturbing secret.
• The Three Weissmanns of Westport by Cathleen Schine, 2010: Recently divorced 75-year-old Betty Weissmann and her two adult daughters are exiled from a life of luxury in New York City to a shabby cottage in Westport, CT, in this modern retelling of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility.
