Smucker's Recalls Natural Chunky Peanut Butter in Michigan

However, managers at Hiller's and Westborn Market in Berkley assure customers that the stores have not been impacted by the recall.

The Ohio-based J.M. Smucker Co. has recalled 16-ounce jars of Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky distributed in many states, including Michigan, due to possible salmonella contamination, according to a report by Fox News.

The recalled jars have a "best if used by" date of Aug. 3, 2012, and Aug. 4, 2012, plus the production codes 1307004 and 1308004, according to the article.

Westborn manager Rob Henry said the grocery store does not sell Smucker’s Natural Peanut Butter Chunky.

"We only carry the creamy in the Smucker's Natural Peanut Butter," said Henry, who added that he receives text alerts about recalls that allow the store to respond quickly. "We want to let the customer know that they don't have to worry about buying our products."

Likewise, Hiller's manager Ezra Graziano said none of the store's products fall within the recall dates.

"We, of course, will to the best of our ability assure that none of the contaminated product is displayed for sale," he said.

Most persons infected with salmonella bacteria develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Most people recover within a week, but some may require hospitalization; in rare cases, the infection can be fatal.

Smucker says no illnesses have been reported, according to Fox News.

The product was distributed in: Arkansas, Colorado, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, New Jersey, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Dakota, Texas, Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia.
