Rediscovered Furniture in Berkley Restores, Customizes High-End Pieces

Owner Becky Jaglois uses various painting and papering techniques to give new life to cast-offs from vaunted manufacturers such as Drexel, Lane, Stickley and Henredon.

One Berkley business owner is bringing to life the old adage "one man's trash is another man's treasure."

Becky Jaglois transforms distressed high-end furniture into custom pieces through various painting and papering techniques at Rediscovered Furniture, which she opened in February at 3125 W. 12 Mile Road.

"I get distressed furniture – I either buy it or it's donated or sometimes its even out of the garbage," she said. "I pay very little for my furniture and then I pass the savings on to customers."

But don't be fooled by her sourcing: Jaglois said she only sells high-end furniture, including pieces by vaunted manufacturers such as Drexel, Lane, Stickley and Henredon.

Customers can purchase refurbished items from her showroom or bring in their own pieces for Jaglois to restore in the studio at the back of Rediscovered Furniture, with pricing based on size and technique.

For example, she has turned television hutches into baby changing tables and even bars.

"People don't use them for TVs anymore," Jaglois said with a laugh. "Everyone has flat screens."

Jaglois said she relocated from Birmingham – where her business was tucked discreetly into a warehouse space in the city's rail district – to Berkley because of its walkable downtown.

"Obviously, it was a no-brainer when I found this place," she said. "I know Berkley. I know Catching Fireflies. I know Yellow Door Art Market. ... It's location, location, location."
