Week in Review: Catch Up on the News You Missed

It was busy this week in Berkley and Huntington Woods, so we'd like to catch you up on what's new in the neighborhood. Here are some of the highlights.

  • On Monday, we followed up on last weekend's Relay For Life of Oak Park-Berkley, which kicked off Saturday and continued into Sunday in Oak Park. but chairwoman Rodneca Gossett said the donation period is open until Aug. 31. Donations are accepted on Relay for Life's website.
  • Huntington Woods officials had to make some tough decisions to balance the 2011-12 budget, including eliminating tree replacements, but they assure residents the move will not compromise the city's canopy. On Tuesday, .
  • On Wednesday, we reported that the Huntington Woods City Commission talked a lot of trash during its meeting Tuesday night at . That's because Commissioner Jules Olsman introduced a motion to amend city Ordinance 30-25, which covers homeowners' responsibilities related to garbage, rubbish, recyclables and compostables. . The commissioners authorized City Manager Alex Allie to send the letter and noted the rules will be strictly enforced starting July 1. The group will work on clarifying the ordinance during its Aug. 16 gathering.
  • Also Wednesday, we reported that with the during its meeting Tuesday night, as well as the termination of its contract with the Ferndale Fire Department, as Pleasant Ridge and Berkley discuss a possible public safety collaboration. The Pleasant Ridge City Commission also authorized City Manager Sherry Ball to continue public safety talks with Berkley, despite passionate objections from Pleasant Ridge residents who packed the Pleasant Ridge Community Center during the meeting.

  • On Friday, we reported that demolition work under way just south of in Berkley is making way for , complete with bistro-style windows and eight new craft beers. Bagger Dave's expects to open the addition in time to hold a kick-off event before the Woodward Dream Cruise on Aug. 20, manager Jon Curtis said.
