City Seeking Part-Time Dispatcher

The City of Birmingham is seeking energetic, organized and dependable applicants for a part-time Dispatcher position with the City’s Police Department. Under the supervision of the Commander, the part-time Dispatcher will dispatch police, fire, emergency and medical units; answer incoming 911 lines, other emergency calls, and police non-emergency lines; operate computer aided dispatch equipment; and monitoring and coordinating police, fire, emergency and medical unit activity and assignments via radio frequencies.

The part-time Dispatcher is expected to provide citizens with quick, efficient and courteous service in person and by telephone and will also be responsible for maintaining daily shift reports and 911 logs. Duties will also include operation of Law Enforcement Information Network and CLEMIS computer equipment and completion of other duties as directed.

Key Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of law enforcement, fire, emergency, and medical terminology and procedures
  • Knowledge of current office software packages, including Microsoft Office applications and the ability and interest to quickly learn and apply new tools and technologies
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and utilize problem-solving skills to assist members of the public and other employees
  • The ability to communicate and collaborate with a diverse range of individuals in carrying out assigned duties with a professional demeanor and excellent customer service and interpersonal skills


Minimum Qualifications
Qualified applicants for this position will possess a track record of performing similar duties in a professional setting with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail and the ability to deal tactfully with a variety of individuals and in diverse and stressful situations.

At the time of application, must possess a high school diploma, or its equivalent, and possess a minimum of 3-4 years of previous work experience, including substantial contact with the public and utilization of a variety of customer service skills. Applicants must possess the ability to work under pressure, exercise good judgment and make sound decisions in emergency situations. Previous related experience, including use of Oakland County CLEMIS and computer aided dispatch systems, is preferred.

Schedule & Wages
This position offers a flexible part-time schedule of up to 20 hours per week and starts at $14.88 per hour. Shifts include morning, afternoons or midnights.
