Gov. Snyder Picks Birmingham Man for Natural Resources Commission

Gov. Rick Snyder has appointed Rex E. Schlaybaugh, Jr., a former chairman and chief executive officer of the law firm Dykema, and a Birmingham resident, to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission for a four-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2015.

Schlaybaugh will be part of a seven-member commission that works with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in ways to conserve, protect, manage, use and enjoy the state’s natural resources — including wildlife, fisheries, timber and minerals, water and harbor resources, along with related resources — for current and future generations.

“Rex is an excellent choice to serve on the Michigan Natural Resources Commission and brings extensive experience to his latest leadership role,” said Peter M. Kellett, Dykema’s chairman and chief executive officer.  “We congratulate him on this well-deserved appointment.”

Schlaybaugh stepped down from his position as Dykema’s chairman and CEO, which he held for 10 years, at the end of 2011, but remains active at the firm. He advises corporate clients, participates on various boards and engages in community and civic activities.

In his more than 25 years with Dykema, Schlaybaugh has built a significant corporate law and corporate finance practice that includes a concentration in mergers and acquisitions; buyouts and recapitalizations; capital markets and lending; and corporate governance for public and private companies.

Schlaybaugh is a frequent speaker on merger and acquisition matters and on corporate governance issues facing boards of directors. He also serves on the boards of several organizations and business entities, including the Detroit Economic Club, the Metropolitan Affairs Coalition, the Detroit Economic Growth Corporation and the John Hancock Life Insurance Company. He previously served as a member and chairman of the Oakland University Board of Trustees.
