Art Center Looking for Entries for 2012 Michigan Fine Arts Competition

The (BBAC) proudly presents the call for entries for the 2012 all-media Michigan Fine Arts Competition (MFAC) exhibit, set for March 30 through May 4 at the BBAC. A total of $10,000 will be awarded to winning artists.

“MFAC is one of the largest statewide juried fine art competitions,” said Annie VanGelderen, interim president and CEO of the BBAC. “This 31st annual exhibit will feature two and three dimensional work in a variety of media by Michigan artists. The talented artists who compete are always interesting and the prize money is substantial.”

Michigan artists, 18 and older, living and working in Michigan are invited to download the application, located at www.BBArtCenter.org (click on the MFAC Application) and enter by Feb. 1. Participation is open to all artists. All entries must be completed online. Artist may submit up to two entries. Video entries are also being accepted.

This year’s juror is Mi-Kyoung Lee, an Associate Professor and the Head of Fibers at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Lee also earned her BFA in Fibers from Dong-A University in Busan, Korea and her MFA in Book Arts/Printmaking from the University of the Arts as well as an MFA in Fibers from Cranbrook Academy of Arts. Lee has had nine solo exhibitions and a number of national and international shows including Cranbrook Museum of Art, Reading Public Museum (PA), New York and Chicago SOFA, Busan Metropolitan Museum in Korea and most recently Espace des Tisserands, Alsace, France.

The BBAC has hosted the competition each spring since 1982 when the Detroit Institute of Arts turned the statewide competition over to the BBAC. Last year’s competition featured the work of more than 100 artists from 50 Michigan cities and there were more than 600 entries.

The opening night reception for the 2012 Michigan Fine Arts Competition will be from 6-8 p.m. March 30. This is traditionally the largest attended exhibit opening for the BBAC each year.  The exhibit is open through May 4. BBAC exhibits and opening receptions are always free and open to the public.
