On the Agenda: East Maple Road, Walgreens Projects Up for Discussion

The Birmingham City Commission meets at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 13, at City Hall.

Appointments

  • The commission will recognize the twelve students representatives to Birmingham boards and commissions from 2011, and then appoint nine new students as non-voting members of everything from the planning board, to the public arts board.
  • Matthew Megaly will interview for a spot on the Board of review as an altnernate member.

  • A request to hold the Celebrate Birmingham Parade on May 20, 2012. Sandy Debicki is up for approval as the chairperson of the 2012 parade committee.
  • Authorizing the city to enter into a contract with Colonial Fireworks to provide the fireworks for the July 3 display at .
  • Extending the existing contract between the city and Great Lakes Power & Lighting, Inc. to provide lighting for the city's parking structures.

Commissioners will consider two altnernatives for the redesign of the East Maple Road corridor from Adams to Eton:

  • Resolution A would approve the reconstruction of East Maple Road with one vehicle lane and one bicycle lane in each direction, and a center lane for left turns. Furthermore, the city would be directed to conduct traffic counts before and after reconstruction and report those findings to the commission on a quarterly basis for up to one year.
  • Resolution B would approve the reconstruction of the corridor with two vehicle lanes in either direction, similiar to what exists now.


Commissioners may also postpone their decision to the March 5 meeting to provide more time for public awareness and input, if they wish.

Walgreens returns to the City Commission Monday night, with commissioners considering the approval of a Special Land Use Permit (SLUP) for the drugstore chain, which is looking to move into the former Borders location on Woodward Avenue. .

Also up for discussion on Monday night:

  • A public hearing of confirmation for the installation of city sidewalks on the west side of Graefield Road, from Derby Road to the south property line of 1798 Pembroke.
  • A request from the Lungevity Foundation to hold the Breathe Deep Michigan, a 5K walk, on May 12 in downtown Birmingham.
