Whiz Kid: Seaholm Senior Places Among Best in the State Math Competition

Kathleen Schaaf scored in the top 100 of the 8,000 students who participated in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition.

Every week, Patch spotlights young people in the Birmingham community who are successeful, talented and just plain awesome. We're pleased to introduce this week's Whiz Kid:

Kathleen Schaaf

  • Age: 18
  • School:
  • Achievement: Kathleen placed in the top 100 out of more than 8,000 students who participated in the Michigan Mathematics Prize Competition. She will be honored at the award presentation Feb. 26 at Saginaw Valley State University.
  • Key to awesomeness: Kathleen is a busy girl, drawing from a lot of experiences: Besides being on the debate team and golf team, Kathleen is also a triplet and lived in England for a short time with her family. Above all, however, she's a student dedicated to her studies. She said she's applied to 13 colleges so far but hasn't made her decision yet.

Do you know a special young person in the community who deservers a round of applause because he volunteers instead of playing video games after school? Or maybe your daughter's science club is trying to challenge the way we think about the energy crisis? Or maybe your son's lacrosse team won its first game in three years? Everyone deserves a little attention, and we want to tell these stories.

So e-mail your Whiz Kid nominations to Editor Laura Houser at laura.houser@patch.com. Please include the name, age, school, achievement and key to awesomeness, as well as a photo. Then come back every Wednesday for our Whiz Kid spotlight; you never know who will be up next.
