Bloomfield's International Academy Ranks No. 1 in Michigan

International Academy in Bloomfield Hills was rated the top public high school in Michigan and one of the best in the country, according to rankings released Tuesday by U.S. News & World Report.

The school was rated 18th in the nation - the only Michigan school to be listed among the country's top 20 best public high schools, according to the rankings.

"We take great pride in our students' accomplishments," said Principal Lynne Gibson. "This is validation of that and it's earned through the efforts and the dedication of our school community each day. We view it as a recognition of our shared commitment to our school and the IB's mission."

International Academy is one school with three campuses, located in Bloomfield Hills, White Lake and Troy. Find more information about the school here.

In 2012, International Academy was rated No. 5 among the nation's public high schools.

Among Michigan's other top ranked schools, Grosse Pointe South ranked fourth in the state, Seaholm High School in Birmingham ranked fifth and Troy High School was rated eighth in the state.

To calculate the ratings, U.S. News partnered with the D.C.-based American Institutes for Research to evaluate schools on overall student performance on state-mandated assessments, as well as how effectively schools educated their black, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students.

Performance on Advanced Placement and International Baccalaureate exams was then used to determine the degree to which schools prepare students for college-level work.
