METRO DETROIT, MI – On some years, shorts and T-shirts have been suitable for the Detroit Tigers home opener.

This year, you might want to wear your winter coat — and maybe even your snow boots — when the Tigers take on the New York Yankees at 1:08 p.m. Friday at Comerica Park.

Some weather forecasts call for a 40 percent chance of snow showers when the opening pitch is thrown out Friday, and raw, 42-degree temperatures and a brisk west-northwest wind gusting up to 18 mph.

Though snow may measurable Friday night, it probably won’t start until after the game.

“We’re looking at periods of snow (Friday) night — that’s when the coldest air and that upper level feature comes across,” Devore said. “Maybe a coating of an inch or two and slippery conditions.”

Suburbs to the west and north of Detroit could see a little more, Devore said.

The rest of the Tigers’ home stand against the Yankees doesn’t any better, the National Weather Service said. the Saturday's game starts at 1:08 p.m. and Sunday's starts at 8:10 p.m.

Saturday’s chilly forecast calls for a high near 34 and a brisk north-northwest wind with gusts as high as 26 mph. The chance for snow showers is 26 percent.

It warms up some on Sunday, with a high near 41, but there’s still a 50 percent chance of rain and snow showers, the weather service said.

The coldest Tigers home opener was in 1997 when it was 36 degrees — along with a 25 mph wind that put the wind chill in mid-20s, MLive.com reported.
