Members of the Bloomfield Hills Department of Public Safety joined forces with agencies from throughout Oakland County on Friday to participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run fundraiser for Special Olympics International.

The relay, which included eastern and western legs that came together in Southfield, raised money and awareness for athletes who participate in Special Olympics Michigan.

"Michigan's Torch Run program had a record breaking year in 2012, raising over $1,000,000," according to its website.

During the eastern leg of the relay Friday, deputies with the Oakland County Sheriff's Department ran from Pike Street and Woodward in Pontiac to Hickory Grove Road, where they handed off the torch to officers from Bloomfield Hills. They carried it to 16 Mile and Woodward before handing off to officers from the Birmingham Police Department.

The eastern and western relay legs were slated to come together in Southfield and wrap up with a pizza party at the city's Civic Center.
