Oakland Co. Doctor Facing Charges In $400K In Insurance Scheme: AG

The doctor collected over $400,000 in disability payments, even though she continued working as a physician, officials said.

BLOOMFIELD HILLS, MI — An Oakland County doctor is facing charges related to a $400,000 disability insurance scheme, according to the Michigan Attorney General's Office.

Rainna Furnari Brazil, 57, of Sylvan Lake, was charged with three counts of false pretenses – $100,000 or more, two counts of false pretenses - $20,000 or more but less than $50,000, two counts of failure to file taxes and one count of insurance fraud.

Brazil, who is a licensed osteopathic physician, received disability insurance payments from the Unum Life Insurance Company of America, even though she continued working as a physician, according to officials.

Officials said Brazil collected the disability insurance payments from 2017 until 2021, and denied that she was still working for compensation, though she was continuing to practice. Brazil collected $400,000 in disability insurance payments during that time, according to officials.

"Insurance fraud, on as large a scale as is alleged here or in any measure, ultimately hurts other insurance customers and honest claimants," Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel said. "I am thankful for the efforts of the Department of Insurance and Financial Services for their watchful eye on these matters, and for referring this case to my office for criminal prosecution."
