Public Schools Cancel Evening Activities Amid Snow Emergency

With snow still falling at a heavy clip, the National Weather Service has declared a winter storm warning for much of the area today. Heavy snowfall yesterday and today led Wayne County to declare a snow emergency, and Wayne State cancelled classes and evening activities today, starting at 2 pm. With expected snowfall of 5 to 8 inches Wednesday, officials have warned local motorists not to travel unless absolutely necessary.

Snow is still falling heavily in Bloomfield Hills this afternoon, and the National Weather Service reports that the rate of snowfall areawide will “exceed 1 inch per hour between 3pm and 7pm and will occasionally reach 2 inches per hour.” The winter storm warning is in effect for many Michigan counties, including Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw and Wayne.

Bloomfield Hills high school and junior high school students were sent home early, allowing buses to return or elementary schools so that they could be dismissed at the regular time (3:55 p.m.). According to the schools’ website, “All after school activities (athletics, recreation, fine arts, etc.) are cancelled this afternoon and this evening. If your child had a scheduled performance, the building will send details as soon as the event is rescheduled. If they participate in an after school recreation program, the recreation team will be in touch in the coming days.” While most activities this afternoon and evening are cancelled, “Latchkey and Kidz Zone will be open for students who are regularly scheduled to attend.”
