What Are Your Chances of Hitting a Deer in Michigan?
The next three months are the highest in likelihood of deer accidents. Be careful out there!

The state of Michigan recently moved from 10th place to 8th, but that's not good news: it's our ranking in the chances of hitting a deer with your car. According to State Farm Insurance, your chances in Michigan are 1 in 85. Wisconsin comes in 6th with a 1/77 chance. Other nearby states fare better. Indiana is 23rd and Illinois, 32nd.
The month of October, soon to be upon us, is the second most likely month in which to hit a deer; November is the mostly likely, and December, third most likely. Here are some tips from State Farm about how to avoid this costly, and sometimes deadly, type of accident:
- Slow down, particularly at dusk and dawn
- If you see one deer, be prepared for more deer to cross the road
- Pay attention to deer crossing signs
- Always buckle up, every trip, every time
- Use your high beams to see farther, except when there is oncoming traffic
- Brake if you can, but avoid swerving, which could result in a more severe crash
- Remain focused on the road, scanning for hazards, including animals
- Avoid distractions, like devices or eating, which might cause you to miss seeing an animal
- Do not rely on products such as deer whistles, which are not proven effective
- If riding a motorcycle, always wear protective gear and keep focus on the road ahead
