Chelsea Police Blotter: Man Arrested for DUI, Leaving Accident Scene

Man arrested after leaving scene of accident

Around 11:59 a.m. Sept. 20, police responded to a parking lot on the 100 block of Park Street on the report of a private property crash. According to a police report, officers met with a witness who stated that a white man in a Ford Pickup had backed into a parked vehicle and attempted to leave.

When the witness confronted the driver he reportedly appeared to be under the influence of alcohol, police said. Prior to the officer’s arrival the suspect driver had fled the scene northbound on Main Street, the report states.

A computer check revealed the address of the suspect, a 56-year-old Chelsea man, and officers responded to the address. Police repeatedly knocked on the door and called the suspect by name, and eventually the man came out of the house and met with officers, the report states.

Police said the man was questioned about the accident and asked to perform standard field sobriety tests and a portable breath test.

After all tests were completed enough probable cause was present to place the suspect under arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol and leaving the scene of an accident, the report states.

The suspect was transported to the hospital for a blood analysis and subsequently released pending laboratory analysis by the Michigan State Police Crime Lab and warrant authorization by the Washtenaw County Prosecutor’s Office, according to the police report.
