F-35, Selfridge Air National Guard Base Decision Delayed

The Pentagon has not yet decided if Selfridge will get the new fighter plane. Selfridge is competing with four other bases.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI — Selfridge Air National Guard Base will have to wait a little longer to find out if it’s getting one of the two installments of the military’s new F-35 fighter. The Pentagon’s decision was supposed to be made by the end of September, but now it appears it will be December before the important choice is made, according to a Macomb Daily report.

“Truax Air Guard Station in Madison, Wis, Dannelly Field Air Guard Station in Montgomery, Ala.; Gowen Field Air Guard Station in Boise, Idaho; and Jacksonville Air Guard Station in Florida are the other bases under consideration. House Speaker Paul Ryan is pushing hard for his home state of Wisconsin to get one of the bases, the newspaper reported.”
“If it was objective, there is no question we would get this, but they look at probably a little bit of political stuff, there are airplanes that are going away and it doesn’t make sense, and I understand that,” Col. Shawn “Lou” Holtz, 127th Wing Operations Group Commander, recently said.
