ACCESS Offers Heart Health Screenings Saturday for Dearborn Students

Student-athletes can have their hearts and vascular system evaluated by a team of specialists on Saturday.

Each year, more and more students die from sudden cardiac arrest due to undetected abnormal heart structure or abnormal heart rhythms.

Once thought to be exceedingly rare, sudden cardiac death is far more prevalent among young athletes than previously believed, recent research has shown. In a 2012 policy statement published in the Journal of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Pediatrics estimated that 2,000 people under the age of 25 die from sudden cardiac arrest in the United States every year.

To help young people and their families have peace of mind, ACCESS is offering athletes, ages 13-18, the opportunity to have their hearts and vascular system evaluated by a team of specialists during ACCESS' back-to-school health fair.

The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 17 at the ACCESS Community Clinic, 6450 Maple St. in Dearborn.

Testing opportunities include a medical history evaluation, blood pressure check, electrocardiogram ($49), echocardiogram ($89), and an additional heart attack and stroke assessment offered for $50.

Students also will be able to get their immunizations and school and sports physicals. Click here for more information.
