Dearborn Schools Program Aims to Excite Kids About Math

Students will host a math education night at Dearborn High School on June 6 open to the public.

With an increased focus on the value of mathematics across the country, students at Dearborn Public Schools are lending a hand to help their fellow classmates conquer their fear of numbers.

Students across the district will host “MATH, Yes…You…Can” on June 6 from 6:15 to 8 p.m. at Dearborn High School.

The free event is open to the entire community, especially parents, teachers, students and school officials interested in learning more about how they can help their students and children with mathematics.

"We are just trying to make the community see that mathematics can be more interesting than it seems, and through that, hopefully motivate students to raise their achievement in the subject," said Mo Charawi, a student at DHS and event organizer.

Mo was inspired to create the event when he learned just how many students struggle in math and are unaware of how much math touches their everyday life. He also wanted to create something that would tie in to the districtwide initiative to refine and improve teaching techniques as well as engage students in the subject of math.

The first session of the evening will focus on creativity in mathematics and helping workshop attendees understand how to succeed in math. This will be followed up by a discussion on the idea of implementing a flipped classroom, wherein the student, as homework, will be able to play, pause, and rewind video lectures that teach the concepts, allowing the teacher to use class time for engaging activities and supplementary lessons for difficult concepts.

The evening will close out with the topic of how to access and use various free online resources.

Dearborn High School is located at 19501 West Outer Drive. For more information, call 734-827-1600.
