Dog, Cat Adoptions For $8 Saturday
The Dearborn Animal Shelter is waiving the adoption fee for animals, thanks to help from the Bissell Pet Foundation.

DEARBORN, MI — If you’ve been considering adopting a dog or cat, Saturday is time to do it and the Dearborn Animal Shelter is the place to be. It will cost just $8 to adopt a pet from noon to 4 p.m.
The Friends for Animals of Metro Detroit is partnering with the Bissell Pet Foundation to host “Empty the Shelter Day.” All adoption fees will be paid by the Foundation — animal lovers pay only the city of Dearborn’s $8 licensing fee.
The goal is simply to find a new home for every dog and cat, said Friends Executive Director Elaine Greene. She said a similar event was held in April and the shelter was, indeed, cleared.

“We were just in awe of all the empty cages,” Greene said. “Everyone was cheering and some of us were crying at the end of the day.”

The shelter’s standard adoption fees usually cost anywhere from $35 to $250 and include full vaccinations, microchipping and spay/neuter services. The Bissell Pet Foundation was founded in 2011 to help reduce the number of animals in shelters and rescues.
“We do expect to be busy, but we’re really looking forward to finding so many homes for our animals,” Greene said. “It’s a great feeling and we’re thankful that Bissell Pet Foundation is helping out.”
