Family Of Dearborn Mom Gunned Down Before Child Seeks Closure

Since she was 6, Eman Eljahmi has relived the night her mother died in front of her eyes. Dearborn police are investigating the cold case.

(UPDATED) DEARBORN, MI — It has been more than 11 years since Aniseh Eljahmi was shot to death in front of her family’s Dearborn home. But for her daughter, her brother and the rest of her family, the pain of her senseless death is still raw, still unchecked. That’s because Aniseh’s killer is still at large.

The Dearborn Police Department is doing everything it can to bring the family’s suffering to an end. Using new policing methods and new technologies, investigators believe they can solve the cold case, one that has has haunted the department since it happened on April 13, 2006. It can’t come a moment too soon for Jabrey Eljahmi.

“It’s very hard to explain what my family has been through,” he said. His sister was just 28 when she was killed. “I can’t even explain the pain we’ve felt. My sister was murdered in front of our home in Dearborn, a community that we love. It’s just really hard to believe that something like this could happen in this fine city.”

According to police, “cold” case is something of a misnomer. The department never stopped following up on leads or closed the case. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” Dearborn Cpl. Gary Cerroni told the media Monday in a press conference held at the department. “We will leave no stone unturned. We do believe we have people of interest. We’re close and only missing the last few pieces.”

Aniseh Eljahmi, who was a Dearborn School District employee, was shot shortly after 11 p.m. Police said her car was parked in front of her home on Houston Street, near Outdrive and Pelham, at the time of the shooting. They believe she was shot shortly after exiting her vehicle. Eljahmi’s daughter, Eman, who was 6 years old at the time, witnessed the murder of her mother, but was unharmed.

Cerroni, who is helping lead the investigation, said the department did a very thorough investigation at the time of the incident. Now, in looking at the case again, they’re looking into every facet and interviewing witnesses again. Both the department and the family are urging anyone with information to come forward.

“Ever since that day, our lives have changed forever,” Jabrey Eljahmi said. “Her death was a tragedy. I challenge anyone in the community to call and come forward with something, anything to help just bring justice. If anyone knows anything, please come forward so the police can do their job.”
