Man Charged After Driving Stolen Car In Dearborn: Police

A Dearborn license plate reader​​ caught the man driving the stolen car. Officers also used a drone to help find him, police said.

DEARBORN, MI — A man is facing charges after police used a license plate reader to determine he was driving a stolen car in Dearborn early Monday morning, according to police.

Avion Johnson, 20, was charged with receiving and concealing a stolen motor vehicle. He was placed in jail with a $5,000 bond. His next court hearing is scheduled for Wednesday.

If convicted, he faces up to 5 years in prison.

Officers arrested Johnson early Monday

Officers found Johnson driving the stolen car early Monday morning in the area of Brady Street and Cherry Hill area after using a license plate reading camera, according to police.

Officers then used a drone with a night-vision camera to help search for the suspected car thief in the dark, according to police.

After locating the suspect, a brief foot chase ensued before officers arrested the suspect in connection with the stolen car, according to police.

Additionally, police believe the suspected car thief was trying to open car doors in the Country Club Neighborhood on the city's west end, according to police.

"We are fortunate to have advanced technology, including license plate cameras and drones, to assist us in our day-to-day operations to locate these suspects. This incident demonstrates the efficient and safe collaboration between our Night Shift Officers, Special Operations Team and Drone Officers in locating and apprehending the suspect," Dearborn Police Chief Issa Shahin said.
