State Police Raids Dearborn Medical Clinic
A West Bloomfield doctor and an employee of the clinic were arrested Thursday.

DEARBORN, MI — A Michigan State Police raid on a Dearborn medical clinic has resulted in two people being charged with multiple felonies. West Bloomfield resident Dr. Mohammad Derani was was charged with four counts of delivery of a controlled substance, according to a Detroit News report.
Zahra Zuhair Alwajed, of Detroit, was charged with four of the same counts, plus a habitual offender charge. A hearing was held for both in Dearborn’s 19th District Court Friday with bonds of $250,000 being given to Derani and $25,000 for Alwajed.
"Any doctor who knowingly prescribes such highly addictive opioids without first conducting evaluations with utmost prudence is directly responsible for the opioid crisis Michigan families face,” said Michigan Attorney General Bill Schuette in announcing the charges. “In this case, the doctor wasn’t just overprescribing, but prescribing the most deadly trio of drugs out there. If we want a brighter tomorrow, we must do everything in our power to find, stop, and prevent bad doctors from handing out drugs that ruin and end lives. We owe that to Michigan’s future, and I am proud of the dedication of my Opioid Trafficking and Interdiction Unit to that mission.”

The clinic is on Warren Avenue and Greenfield Road. WXYZ-TV reported that Derani may have prescribed as many as 500,000 pain killer prescriptions since January. State Police told the television station that’s about five times the average for a doctor.
