DETROIT — Two Detroit restaurants serve up some of the best dishes in the nation, according to a New York Times list.
On Wednesday, The New York Times released "26 of the best dishes we ate across the U.S. in 2024" list and two Detroit restaurants made it: Mike's Famous Ham Place and Leila.
Mike's, which is located in a small white and gray building along Michigan Avenue near Corktown, was picked for its ham sandwich. The sandwich features several pieces of ham on a poppy-seed roll with a slice of cheese, a squirt of yellow mustard and some pickles.

"I don’t know if Mike Muftari dreams of ham, but his ham sandwich has been on my mind since May," the Times’ Sara Bonisteel wrote.
Leila, located in downtown Detroit’s Capitol Park, was picked for its Lebanese Sundae, which Bonisteel said "delights with its simplicity and whimsy."

"Arriving to the table like a Star Trek tribble ready for a night on the town, this dessert holds your attention from the first bite," Bonisteel wrote. "Pistachios cover the mop of fairy floss atop the dish, and ashta, the rose-flavored ice cream with hints of orange blossom water, hides underneath the gossamer."
