2 Kids Freeze To Death In Van Parked Outside Detroit Casino: Reports

DETROIT — Two children froze to death Monday morning while sleeping inside a van that was parked at Detroit's Hollywood Casino in Greektown, according to multiple news reports.

Police said five children were sleeping in the van that was parked inside the structure when the mother noticed her 9-year-old son and 2-year-old girl were not breathing, according to news reports.

A family arrived and took the children to a nearby hospital where they were pronounced dead, according to news reports.

Officials were still trying to determine the cause of death, but they believe the children froze to death, according to news reports.

The three other children in the van, ages 11, 9 and 4, were also taken to a nearby hospital where they appeared to be OK, according to news reports.

Officials believe the family was living in the van, which pulled into the casino around 1 a.m. Monday and parked on the ninth floor before it ran out of gas, leaving them without heat, according to news reports.

Police were still investigating the incident and are not ruling out charges against the mother, according to news reports.
